The new COVID-19 cases in the United States tanked to the lowest in over a year as more and more Americans continued to be vaccinated. Over the Memorial Day weekend, the number of travellers at the countrywide airports also jumped to a record high since the start of the Coronavirus crisis, adding to the signs of improvement after an unprecedented Coronavirus-related hit to the global travel and tourism industry.
U.S. registered 11,976 new COVID-19 cases on 29th May
According to the John Hopkins University, the U.S. registered 11,976 new COVID-19 cases on 29th May – the lowest number since 11,238 new cases that were recorded last year on 23rd March. The data further highlighted that the 7-day average now stands at 21,007 – also the lowest since 31st March 2020 when it printed at 19,363.
According to the Transportation Security Administration, its checkpoints at the U.S. airports recorded 1.9 million travellers over the weekend versus 327,000 in the comparable period of last year.
In total, the Coronavirus pandemic has so far infected over 33 million people in the United States and caused more than 0.6 million deaths. COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation on 11th March 2020.
The daily passenger numbers at the U.S. airports have remained above 1 million since March 11th, 2021. As per the CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention), more than 40% of U.S. adults are now fully vaccinated.
President Biden wants about 160 million U.S. adults to be vaccinated before the Independence Day
The data further highlighted that at least one dose had been vaccinated in over 60% of U.S. adults now. By the 4th of July, President Biden wants 70% of the adults to have received at least one dose and roughly 160 million to be fully vaccinated. In his recent announcement, Biden said:
“If we succeed in this effort, then American will have taken a serious step towards a return to normal.”
The CDC recently updated its guidelines that said fully vaccinated people in most settings were no longer required to wear masks. In public transportation, trains, busses, and aeroplanes, however, masks are still needed.
The United States has been lifting COVID-19 restrictions in recent weeks. Dr Anthony Fauci (White House’s chief medical advisor) wants the daily number of the new Coronavirus cases to slip below 10,000 before a wider relaxation strategy can be laid out.
